The Australian hedge fund awards organisers – The Alternative Future Foundation and Hedge Funds Rock – have announced the finalists for their night of nights, taking place in Sydney on September 12.

The evening caps off what is generally dubbed ‘hedge funds week’, which includes the annual summit organised by the Alternative Investment Management Association taking place on September 11. Combined, the two events attract more than 500 people from Australia, New Zealand and other countries.

Kim Ivey, Australian Future Foundation chairman and a co-founder of Hedge Funds Rock, said: “This year’s judging has seen a record number of managers and products being assessed. I’d like to thank Mercer as our research partner, Michael Armitage and Rebecca Jacques for joining the judging team in 2019.

“Congratulations to all the nominees. This year, with a host of new offerings over the past three years, we have been able to add another category to the awards – Best Private Debt Fund…

“The charities, the awards, the parody videos, and the comradery…all make for a hugely enjoyable night. I look forward to another wonderful night with the industry.”

Meanwhile, AIMA announced its final speaker line-up last week too. Michael Gallagher, AIMA Australia general manager, said the event was likely to be another sell-out, with a great list of speakers and an extension of the breakout “operations’ sessions, which have proved very popular.

One of the highlights should be an interview with Bill Bohnsack of the highly regarded US hedge fund manager Oak Hill Advisors, who will be talking with Australia’s equally famous investor Michael Block, the CIO of Australian Catholic Super.

Block once told a big investment conference at which he was invited to speak: “I always get invited to speak at a conference like this twice. The second time is to apologise for the first time.
